Spring Into Riding

Sydney_Harbour_Bridge_Sunday_RideAfter a rain-soaked false start, it looks like Spring has finally arrived in Sydney. Thanks to longer days and milder weather it’s a perfect time to get out and ride. Or perhaps take up riding for the first time! If the latter, I highly recommend the free courses provided by Sydney Cycleways. Run by the good folks at BikeWise and supported by the City of Sydney, the courses now cover everything from teaching littlies to ride their first bike to gaining confidence in riding in traffic and handy bike maintenance. As a regular rider, I still learnt a thing or two.

If the good weather isn’t motivation enough, there are plenty of bike-related events coming up to get you back in the saddle. Sydney Rides Festival runs 11-25 October and is the umbrella name covering a whole range of events. Here’s my pick of the bunch:

  • Checkpoint Challenge Oct 12 – a two wheeled adventure played out on Sydney streets and social media
  • Spring Cycle Oct 19 – annual organised ride with distance options of 15, 55 or 100km (thanks to Sydney Cycleways you can get 25% off entry fees with the code syd-cycleways-14)
  • Sydney Rides the Night Oct 25 – a new event for 2014 which sounds like a one-night Vivid festival on wheels. Make sure you’ve got lights and reflectives, and bring a camera!

But why stop there? Why not use it all as training for Sydney’s premier fund-raising ride, the Gong Ride on Nov 2 … whoops, does that link direct you to my fundraising page? Sorry about that – I’m sure you can click through to register once you’ve made a donation. Remember, every dollar you donate is a dollar that doesn’t get distributed according to Hockey’s budget!
